The Power of Fatherhood: Exploring Policy for Today's Families

12:30 – 1:30pm

Join the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy for a conversation on the state of fatherhood across the Commonwealth. The discussion will feature report co-authors Gerard Robinson, Professor of Practice of Public Policy and Law, and Brad Wilcox, Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project, and will be moderated by Andy Pennock, Associate Professor of Public Policy.Drawing on Virginia demographic and education data, the report finds that roughly one in four children live apart from their biological fathers, with measurable differences in academic achievement, behavior, and mental health. It also examines how family structure intersects with racial disparities in education and the impact of parental incarceration on more than 100,000 children statewide. This Batten Hour will explore the evidence and its implications for public leadership, asking what role education, criminal justice, and social policy should play in supporting father engagement and child opportunity.
